Why did you decide to lose weight?
While at the Spring Fling dance at my school, one of my classmates took a picture of me dancing and posted it on the Internet. I hated the way I looked and finally decided it was time to change.
What were your biggest challenges throughout your weight loss?
My biggest challenges were trying to break myself away from fast food. My friends and I ate a lot of fast food, so it was hard to go out with them. They would eat fried chicken and French fries while I ate salads. At first, it made me cranky, but I knew it would pay off—and it did. I feel great!
Which SparkTeens feature has helped you most?
The Nutrition Tracker helped me the most. It made it easy for me to record my nutrition intake and helped me find out what I needed to have in my next meal to reach my goals.
How did you eat before compared to now?
Instead of eating three big meals a day, I now eat five smaller meals. I also bring snacks to eat during class so I keep my energy level up throughout the day. Some other ways I make healthier food choices now are by exchanging fried food for baked or grilled items and drinking smoothies instead of milkshakes.
What role does fitness play in your life? How often do you work out?
I work out almost every day! I use Wii Fit, EA Sports Active, and Just Dance 2 every day, but I do try to switch up my routine to avoid plateaus. I am more active now than I ever was before, and like to try new workouts like Cardioke and Zumba to keep it fun and interesting.
Now that you’ve lost the weight, what are your other life goals?
I want to be a part-time model, have my own reality show, become a journalist, and have a small business. I have also started my own healthy pastry business in my entrepreneurship class!
When you have a rough day, what keeps (or kept) you from quitting?
I keep a picture of two of my role models with me at all times: Kim Kardashian and Rihanna. I really look up to them and seeing them helps to keep me motivated. I think they look great, but also have a lot of confidence, so they help me continue moving forward with my goals.
What advice would you have for someone who is just starting his or her healthy journey?
You don’t have to sacrifice foods that you like. It’s all about portion control and moderation. For example, you can eat cake, but make sure it is a small slice rather than a large slice.
Do you have any advice for others on creating healthy habits?
Partner up! I found it more interesting and helpful to include friends and find people who are interested in reaching healthy goals too. Also, it’s all about feeling good. If you feel good, you’ll look good!
